We don't know if we will be alive tomorrow… God what is happening, where are you, this whole thing of tribes, I don’t even get it” SN 14 year old, Kigali, April 94 This 14 year old is me writing in my teenage diary. I was in Rwanda during the genocide against the Tutsi, I kept a diary of my time in Rwanda from April to early June 1994. I opened this journal for the first time in 19 years exactly in April 2014. At that time I felt ready to confront some of the feelings I had during that time - well the main feeling really I had: FEAR. Fear that I will not live to see another day, that I will not see my family, that I will be raped like the women whose bodies were scattered in the streets of Kigali. A vivid image imprinted in my mind is coming across the body of a dead woman, which showed clear evidence that she had been raped. As a 14 year old girl that image had such an impact on my life, that right there and then I made the vow that should I be lucky and live through the genocide, I would be an advocate for women’s rights, and fight alongside those who had experienced sexual violence. Each year, Rwandans remember what happened in 1994. It has been 30 years and reflecting on what these 30 years mean as a Rwandan woman has been the result of a long process. Of recognising and accepting that what happened in my country changed the course of my life and that of every Rwandan. Accepting that though we may not all carry the physical wounds of our history, our minds …the state of our minds tells a different story. Recognising that for some (not all) in order to heal, one has to forgive, but most importantly accepting that forgiveness does not come overnight. It is a very personal, painful but necessary process. How do you cope as a child when you feel unloved by your mother? When you realise that you are the result of a terrible and violent event in her life? How do you cope as a mother when you ache to love your child but cannot as he/she is a reminder of that time? Rwanda went through the most horrific 100 days 30 years ago, but we have rebuilt and are still rebuilding our country. One vehicle through which the country is being rebuilt is the church. I remember visiting Rwanda in March 2014 when I first joined Tearfund’s sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) team and seeing how the church had been mobilised to support survivors of sexual violence as part of a Tearfund pilot programme implemented by the Anglican Diocese of Kigali and Gasabo. At that time, speaking with SGBV survivors and hearing their testimonies of what the church had done made me really proud to be a Christian and working for Tearfund. The church in Rwanda had become a beacon of hope for those who felt hopeless. One survivor told me that the care she received from her church allowed her to face the world, she no longer felt shame, she was accepted and adopted into their family. Fast forward ten years later, Tearfund’s SGBV work has expanded to more than 13 countries and we are seeing the real impact of working through the local church to restore relationships and bring about transformation. . We live in difficult times, where there is much suffering and great need around the world. We see crisis after crisis and it is a major concern, but the example of Rwanda demonstrates that there is HOPE. God is at work, at times we might not see it but He is working! And we must keep believing that what He has started , He will also be faithful in completing. Again it is such an honour for me to come your way and think with you on this week's weekly wisdom as we focus on "Growth and the Comfort Zone".Quote: ​Growth and comfort never coexist. - Ginni RomettyTIP: If everything is feeling comfortable, you probably need to sit down and do some goal setting. We each need to keep pushing ourselves every day to get better, to grow and to be challenged.Practical Application : ​Do you remember when you realized you had stopped growing? Your height or your shoes size, was ging to be just that, no more growing tall, or changing shoe sizes? For me it was a trilling moment becuse alas! I could start a shoe and Jacket collection (Now you know my favourinte things haha)But aside these physical changes of growth the real stuff happens on the inside when we begin to figure out who we are, its a process that never ends and most certailny a process that never happens in the comfort zone.Can you imagine if a baby ever decides to stop learning to walk because they keep tumbling each time they tried? We would all be grown up but still crawling in nappies! What an awful sight that would be right?Well, that is exactly what happens each time we choose to stay in our comfortable spot. Maybe you feel stuck in our everyay lives. A job that doesn't utilise our gifts, a relationship that is more take than give, a habit that is edging on addiction. Unlike the one who chooses to stay in the comfort zone, there is a direction to turn when circumstances have you feeling boxed in. I always like to really take time to think through what I must share with you all, you know they say patience is a virtue, so I guess that makes us all virtuous women right?Now, let's dive into our wisdom for this week.Quote for the week “You are never too small to make a difference.” - Greta ThunbergTIP: Greta Thunberg’s move to save the earth is a vivid example of age must never be a barrier. That at whatever stage you are in this life you can make a difference. We all can make a great difference in the different spheres of life we find ourselves in; business, science, communication, finance, education, aerospace, environment, community and even our own homes etc.We all have what it takes to make a difference and it starts everyday.Last year we started with less than the 2600 people on our facebook and less than 300 on our instagram, however with consistency, focus and commitment to our vision, we were able to reach over 1.2M people globally through our digital footprint. Our overall global impression from both facebook and instargram alone was 1.7M. Never doubt the power of a small committed group of people to change the world or make a difference.So what's my point I hear you ask? Well my point is you're never too small or old or too late to make a difference to someone, you must be willing and ready to seize the opportunity to ensure today matters.You can't make a difference to others if you aren't making any difference in your own life, it always STARTS with YOUPractical application: ​I will share what I have learnt from my mentor and friend John Maxwell to mention but a few;To make a difference ;You must learn how to decide everyday what's important to you and just get it done Remember today may well fall into pieces if you lose your attitude, your attitude is what gives you opportunities or takes away opportunities Today is yours to make the most of, keep your eyes on what matters most - your priorities will give you focus To make a difference to others requires you to stretch your imagination, your vision, creativity and thinking, and take time to think of new ways of adding value to others, for it is by adding value to others that we truly become valuable. You must stay the course, develop resilience, reinforce what is important and make a commitment to do it You must have a plan for your life and your vision, because failure to plan is planning to fail.
